SCENES | July, July! | Summer 2017

I moved to Washington, D.C. in January 2013, but each year I have traveled elsewhere to celebrate the 4th of July with friends. The remorse I felt at missing Independence Day festivities in the nation's capital was reduced when, while scrubbing through family home video footage, I came across the reminder that I had indeed celebrated the 4th in DC, eighteen years ago! In the video above, I compare 1999 with 2017.

My friend Lee Anna hosted a classic American barbecue to celebrate this year, and the inimitable Dan Nobles hauled out his cornhole set so that Andrew and I could continue our undefeated streak. Despite the crowds, we walked down to the National Mall for an incredible fireworks show framing the Washington Monument...which was slightly disconcerting at times, with the explosions reminding me of action movies like Olympus Has Fallen. Emily Bryant deserves my gratitude for convincing me to wake up early to see the National Mall at sunrise, something I haven't done in quite a while, and something it is impossible to regret once you're awake enough to enjoy it!
