Chris Stapleton is a force to be reckoned with in the world of Country music. And in the world of music in general. In 2015 he released Traveler, one of my favorite "listen on the highway" collections (which is a designation that carries a lot of weight with me), swept the CMAs and blew the roof off of Bridgestone Arena with his duet with Justin Timberlake, and became something of a figurehead for "real country" in a world where the FM dial is saturated with watered down, forgetful pop country. From A Room: Volume 1 doesn't miss a beat in continuing his ascent to greatness.

Two things about the album name are significant. It was recorded in Nashville at RCA Studio A, where Waylon & Willie and other Country greats created classic sounds. And it is one half of Stapleton's 2017 offerings (which is something to celebrate if Volume 2 is even half of the quality of Volume 1). Mellow and haunting, "Without Your Love" is my favorite track of the nine. "Either Way" and "I Was Wrong" build from slow to soul, both ripping through the air, charged with the grit and tear of his unmatched vocals. There is copious amounts of Country & Blues, without sacrificing a little rhythm here and there.

I asked my friend Elizabeth (who has a sharp musical taste and is an incredible singer in her own right) to describe the album in 3 words or less, and her response was "humble, retro, and soulful". I couldn't agree more. I expect I'll be hard pressed to wear out Volume 1 before Volume 2 drops, but I'll try as hard as I can.
