Why I Chose It: I received this edition of the Gospel's for Christmas in 2016, and decided to start of 2017 by reading it.

Quotes: (1) "And Mary said, 'My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty." (2) "They said to each other, 'Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures'" (3) "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." (4) "Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name."

Other Notes: It seems a little funny to list "God" as the author here. Not because it is in any way inaccurate. Cataloguing scripture in the same format as the other books I've read on this site is interesting, because some of the conventions I've followed interact differently with the Bible. Some might list Crossway in some sort of authorial (translation) role, others might use Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John as the authors. But ultimately, a fundamental belief of Christianity is the fact that all of the Bible was authored by God through the inspired writing of many different "under-authors". It is a simple thing, really...the four Gospels, the "good news" of who Jesus is and what he did, is God's story. Now, this edition, a "reader's" edition in the ESV translation is a wonderful thing to read. It strips away everything from the text, leaving only the words, cleanly printed, in a beautiful presentation. There are no chapter and verse markings, letting you simply read. The quotes I picked were just a few verses that stood out to me during this pass through the books.
