TRAVEL | Cyclades Islands | Summer 2017
Patmos. Samos. Crete. Each island sharing many of the fundamental elements that tie the Cyclades Islands together - history, legend, ruggedness, beauty, BLUE. Yet each island also particular and unique. Admittedly, this was a dream - cruising from island to island throughout the Aegean? Going from the actual physical place where the Apostle John received and wrote Revelation to the site of the oldest known civilization in Europe, all while sailing through beauty and history, passing by places that each deserve attention and lingering in their own right!
I didn't take my camera with me everywhere on these islands. There's no point in trying to capture it all - I wanted to focus and experience and enjoy as well as document...and besides, I wasn't sure I was up to accurately depicting all of the blue everywhere around me. I just watched and wondered for much of the time. I found Heraklion and Crete especially interesting. Home to the Minoans, so much of the mythology I learned in high school related to these places and ruins (the Minotaur, Icarus, Daedalus etc.) Few things are more fascinating than starting to grasp the reality behind some of these myths, piecing together the actual events and places that gave birth to ancient attempts at explaining the world.
